Global search by email address wrong results

When searching by an email address in global search I get not only the matches for the exact email address but also partial matches, so if I am looking for someone with a Gmail address I will get any and all references to any email addresses @gmail.com

That defeats the purpose of the Global Search in my opinion. I'd like to get Targets, Leads, Accounts and Contacts with that Exact address, not all gmail addresses.

Has anyone fixed this issue?

Hi there,
I was confronted with the same questions concerning the global search result presentation order on email addresses when a lot of records are created with "gmail" domain.
The exact email address is not always listed on the top.

This is documented 3 years ago as "high prio" bug in case portal

As a workaround the search string on global search can be stripped of the domain, so the result is more accurate and all other "gmail" hits are excluded.
Example:
instead of searching xy@gmail.com just search for xy.
