I am either doing it incorrectly, or it is not working.

When I go to a Contact record, I have the following:

It would seem to me that I should then be able to enter "Client" in the Search and get the same record.

But when I do the search, I get the following.

You need to add "%" at the beginning of search field once the word you are looking for lies at the middle of Email's subject.

So your search criteria should be:

%Client

I may have missed this, but is it not searching through all text in emails, notes, meetings, etc.?

That's what I am really trying to do.

In this particular instance, there are hundreds of records for this Account and I am trying to find when a particular thing was mentioned.

SugarCRM will look for all fields set at quicksearch_field, which is defined in the modules/<Module>/clients/base/filters/default/default.php. Eventually such attribute may be defined in the respective custom folder.

If you do not select any module on dropdown "Related" it will look for all quicksearch_field fields on all related modules.
