We are B2B. How do others maintain history when a contact changes companies?

As a B2B company we constantly have contacts move from one company to another but we want to maintain the old record of everything they did with us at the previous company and relate the old contact to the new contact at the new company and make it very easy for our use community to do this. Something like a merge delete without deleting. Any ideas?
