While I can't help on the Python front, I think one option would be to use the /metadata GET endpoint. There isn't any help documentation on this endpoint, as it's not designed to be publicly consumed, but it does hold the information you're looking for. Sugar uses the /metadata GET endpoint when checking the browser and file system cache. If you capture your browser's requests via the Network tab in the developer tools, you should see what's returned.
