How to set the Currency for a Record conditionally?

If you have several currency fields on a Record, and you edit one of these fields to show $ instead of £, all the currency fields on the record Change, using the conversion rate. Changing the currency in the UI sets the Currency ID for the record and all values recalc - This is fine.

What I am wondering.. is there a way  conditionally set the currency of the record conditionally.

Our records have a "region" field, that we could use to determine the currency to display.

So if the record is for a client with a "US" region, we would want any currency fields to display $USD values and format.

I don't see the currency ID as a field that we can set in Process Author.

I can see the currency ID in the data table but changing tat dosn't convert the values, just changes their format.

Or is it better to let the currency be selected based on logged  user settings or something?

(using SugarCRM 7.7 Enterprise)
