Email Workflow Cannot Access Related Lead Fields

Trying to create a workflow triggered when an Email record is created and the related Lead has a status = new


I've found I can successfully create the same workflow but for when a Call record is created that is related to a lead.  In this case, the condition module is:  Leads: Leads


However when you create a workflow for the Emails module, there is no Leads: Leads module option for the condition.  Only Leads: Emails: Leads  and selecting this does not allow it to get the status field value of the related lead. 


Is there a fix?
