Unable to connect to database after php upgrade

Hi,
I have a SugarCRM 6.5.18 installation that used to work with no problem.

When I tried to login today, I wasn't able and the only thing that display is a Warning error saying the I could not connect to the db with the username (the one specified) and password...

The ONLY thing that has changed since my last connection is that I thing I upgraded my PHP to a more recent version... and I know that more recent versions require MySQLI connections...

In my config file, it is still saying that the type is mysql, but that the manager is MysqliManager... I didn't change those, but even if I change them to type: mysqli OR manager: MysqlManager, I still can't connect...

So, what can I do? I wanted to upgrade to 6.5.21, hoping that the issue is fixed in this version, but I can't use the automatic upgrade, so would just coping the files upgrade to 6.5.21? I also tried to reinstall, but when I arrive to the step where I need to connect to db, I have the same error plus additionnal errors saying that a parameter was expecting a boolean and received X instead...
