Non responsive GUI, App Layer Performance issues - SugarCRM 7 Professional

Have 5 million plus CRM records, application layer and db servers have recommended hardware/environment configs, yet gui constantly times out or hangs, reports are non functional.  Anyone have experience in high demand consumer CRM deployments?  We are on SugarCRM 7 Professional on-premise.
