How do you identify alternate business names for an account?

I'm wondering if anyone has a recommendation for this situation. If a company was acquired by another and now assumes a new name or if a company does business as a different name, how do you identify these alternate names without creating new accounts and linking them as member organizations?

The reason I do not want to create multiple accounts and then link them as member organizations is because I do not want contacts accidentally created under these DBA or FKAs.

For example, US Airways is merged with American Airlines, or Countrywide was acquired by Bank of America. The two former companies are gone and therefore shouldn't be an account.  However, I'd like to track this historical information and make it identifiable (but not as a "Note"; Notes get buried and the alternate names should always remain visible.)

Does anyone have suggestions?
