How do I create an API filter on a multienum field that only returns records where the field has a value?

I am trying to create a filter on the standard "GET /<module>" REST API call that will filter on a multienum filed and only return records where that field has at least one option selected.

I have tried the following three filters:

"filter":[
{
     "multienum_fieldname":{
         "$not_equals":""
     }
}
]
"filter":[
{
     "multienum_fieldname":{
         "$not_contains":""
     }
}
]
"filter":[
{
     "multienum_fieldname":{
         "$not_in":[""]
     }
}
]

None of which seem to work.  In fact, they seem to return every record!
