Add custom field to knowledge base edit layout

Am fairly new and starting to customize our on demand interface. In the studio, I am trying to make a change to the Knowledge Base edit layout but that is not available. I added a custom field to add a category to KB articles and I can add it to search layouts etc but if an author can't actually enter a category in the edit or create layout, the custom field is kind of useless to search on isn't it? Must I create a custom KB module to add that field to a custom edit/create layout? Am I missing something simple? TIA
