Cannot connect to remote database during install

I'm trying to install a freshly downloaded SugarCE-6.5.20 on a Debian Wheezy Apache2 using a remote MySQL database. I get the dreaded: "The provided database host, username, and/or password is invalid, and a   connection to the database could not be established.  Please enter a   valid host, username and password" "Unable to check database version."

When I do "mysql -u sugarcrm -h myhost.fqdn -p -- sugarcrm" from the web-server machine everything works as expected. Pasting the same values into the configuration page leads to the error described above.

Are there any logs or sandboxes to help troubleshooting? Is there an option for manual configuration?

Any ideas?
