Enforcing required fields when converting a lead

Hi there

We have some demographic custom fields that we record against a lead at some point within the qualifying cycle. We need these to be required when converting to an account, but not required otherwise. 

These fields will exist at the account level too, and be mapped across. However they are not required for the account if created by other means.

Is it possible to enforce this, and how?
