What's the best way to add Notes to a custom module?

I have a custom module and want to add a relationship with the Notes module.
I have successfully created a relationship between the two modules but I want to leverage the "Parent" concept so the Parent of the Note is my custom module.

Whatever I do I would like it to move to 7.5.x without jumping through hoops if possible.
Adding my custom module to the custom/language/en_us.lang.php file doesn't seem to do it.
I added it to

$GLOBALS['app_list_strings']['parent_type_display']

But the values I see when creating a note don't match this list but rather the original list.
Is this list not something we can modify to add modules? I'm guessing there some javascript somewhere to change the relationship being saved when the dropdown is changed...

Is there a way to get Notes to have a custom parent?

thanks,
