Does the date modified field reset a time elapsed workflow?

I've created several time elapsed workflows.  Here's my scenario:

When a Lead status = Mgmt Review for 2 days I want to send a reminder email for follow up.  If the status still doesn't change after 4 days I want another email to fire.

I've created 2 separate workflows with the above criteria, but I noticed that after the first email fired, the date modified field of the Lead updated to the day the workflow fired.  

So I'm wondering, does the date modified field reset the timer for these time elapsed workflows.
