Server not responding on Linux installation

First time installation of SugarCRM on (shared) linux server. I cannot get to the Installation Wizard.

I'm on a Mac. Using Fetch, I uploaded the zip file and used Terminal to unzip. I renamed the SugarCRM directory to 'crm'. I set the permissions on all the enclosed php files to 777. I verified that the php.ini file (two directories up) has the variables_order parameter set to EGPCS.

Using Safari, I went to [domain]/crm/install.php

Safari times out and displays the compass page with "server not responding".

Suggestions?
