How can I insert a case number into the auto-reply email?

I'm trying to insert the Case Number that is generated in the Auto-Reply email.  I feel like this is a simple functionality, but can't figure out how to make it work.  Most of the work I do is front-end, but I am familiar with Linux, (not so much php).  Any code changes would I could probably figure out, but don't want to break our production system in the process :)

I can generate the emails, but the fields appear as the "system variables" not the data themselves...(see attached imaged)

It does not matter what I change the case macro (preserving the %1) it always appears in replry as
Re:Whatever_I_put_in_case_macro  but it doesnt use the ticket number generated from the email.  (That is working btw...)
