How can I have multiple Assigned To users on one record?

Our CRM sales model has customer who purchase multiple types of products.  Depending on what product they purchase they have a different Sales rep.  What are the issues of changing the Assigned-To user to many to many?

I would like to continue to use out of the box notifications and the "My ...." filters.
Has anyone done this and have an experienced with how it affects the system. 

Also we are currently on SugarCRM 6.7 and I don't want to make any changes that could hinder the upgrade to 7.x
