Display user errors in Sugar 7

In the 6.* days when you had an error to display to the user you could do a:
SugarApplication::appendErrorMessage('We have a major issue here...');
Or a:
displayAdminError('It just got even worse....');
In 7, I don't see anything in Sidecar to accomplish the same goal. If something does exist I'd imagine that it would eventually propagate and be shown to the user via an app.alert.show() call.

Is there currently a way to display an error message in a similar fashion in 7? This is useful for a number of reasons. It allows for passing an error message no matter what view the user is currently viewing.
